Physical or mental illness, hormonal influences or simply stress: There are many reasons for insomnia. Insomnia means having difficulties in falling asleep, difficulties in sleeping through the night, waking up early in the morning and chronic unrestful sleep. In addition, those affected complain of, for example, fatigue, attention or memory problems, mood disorders, tension, headaches and/or worries about the sleep disorder. Insomnia is one of the most common forms of sleep disorders. They can be triggered, for example, by mental stress (e.g. financial worries) or medication abuse (such as excessive use of sleeping pills).
The unsatisfactory duration or quality of sleep affects the state of health and performance during the day. It can slow down your reaction time and can increase the risk of long-term conditions. It can lead to considerable suffering. Insomnia can occur acutely and subside again, but under certain conditions (maladjustments on a physical, mental and psychological level) it can also become chronic.
There are many causes for insomnia. Stress, poor sleep habits, eating too much late in the evening, mental health disorders, some medications, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol and many more common causes can be the reason for a restless night.
When dealing with sleep disturbances it's important to talk to a doctor or general practitioner. If a specific sleep disorder is suspected or if an already known sleep disorder persists it's best to visit a sleep medical centre
