Mezereon is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 1.2 meters in height. It has clusters of pink or red flowers, little red berries, and oval to lance-shaped leaves.
Mezereon was commonly used in northern Europe as an external ointment for skin ulcers and malignant sores and an internal purgative. According to Carolus Linnaeus, a Swedish naturalist, the bark was given to dogs with rabies and reptiles with venomous bites. It has been claimed that people have died from eating birds that have eaten the toxic berries.
Mezereon is found in damp mountain forests across Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia and is cultivated in gardens. Its bark and roots are harvested in autumn.
