Prickly annual Mexican poppies can reach heights of 1 m (3 ft). has huge, delicately petalled yellow blooms and prickly, white-veined leaves.

This plant, like most poppies, releases a milky latex that has historically been used in Ecuador to treat cataracts.

Tropical locations from the southernmost US to South America support the growth of the Mexican poppy. It prefers dry soil and is frequently seen in fields of tobacco.
