Cashew is mainly known as a nut but is also used for other medicinal purposes. The cashew nut grows on an evergreen tree that also has fruit that is very valuable. The roots, gum, nuts, leaves, and even bark can be used for different concerns. The cashew nut is mainly used as part of a healthy diet. What most people do not know is that the lining of the nut is toxic and is removed before packaging and eating. The nut is high in both protein and healthy fat. In herbal medicine the leaves are used for both gum and tooth issues. The bark and the roots are purgative and detoxifying. The gum of the cashew tree is mainly used for external skin conditions such as corns or fungal infections. If you are using cashew for digestive issues such as ulcers, it is best to get the nut or fruit. It should be noted that the oil from the shell of the nut is very irritating and should not be used in any form. The vapor from the oil should not be used either since it is just as irritating.

Since this tree is native to tropical areas, most of the history and folklore is from Africa and South America. There are different legends surrounding the cashew nut and its special properties of healing and relief. In Brazil the cashew is used for jams and drinks. The part of the cashew is the apple or fruit that is used for food. The drink is known as cajuado and is pressed from the cashew fruit. There are also soda drinks that are cashew flavored and are known as suco de caju. The gum from the stem of the cashew fruit is highly irritating and has been used as an insect repellent.

The cashew tree is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 45 feet or 15 meters. The cashew nut is centered below the cashew apple or fruit. The nuts can also grow in and around the flowers of the tree. The tree also features oval leaves that are green in color. This tree does best in tropic regions, whether they are dry or wet in nature. While the tree is resilient, It is important that the tree does get enough water. Sandy soil is the ideal soil for a cashew tree, but the tree can do well in other soils as long as the weather is warm enough and it is probably watered.

Uses

Detoxifying cashew bark has been used to help cure snake bites. It can also be used on skin and fungal infections.

Diet can help protect against inflammation and other digestive issues such as ulcers.

Mouth Concerns the cashew has been used both African and Indian medicine for toothaches and gum pains.
