In India, cardamom has been known for many millennia as a spice and medicinal plant. The Egyptians chewed the seeds to freshen breath and whiten teeth. According to legend, Alexander the Great brought the plant to Europe. The ancient Romans refined their dishes with the powerful spice. They certainly appreciated the digestive effect of the seeds: After the communal feast, their essential oils dispelled the unpleasant stomach ache.

Originally, cardamom comes from southern India and Sri Lanka. Both countries, along with Guatemala, are now among the main areas of cultivation. The dried seeds and fruits are commercially available throughout the year. After saffron and vanilla, cardamom is one of the most expensive spices in the world. Harvesting is laborious manual work: the small capsules must be collected before they are completely ripe. Otherwise they burst open and lose their precious seed cargo.

Use in the kitchen Cardamom pods are known for their sweet smell and strong taste. Mainly the plant is used for the production of bread and baked goods.
