In South America, angostura is a traditional tonic and fever cure mainly used for intestinal ailments. Native Amazonians also utilize the herb as a fish poison. Although the source of "bitters" has been identified as Angostura, the exact composition of the drink remains a trade secret. Whether this component is part of the famous cocktail flavoring is uncertain.

Angostura originates from tropical South America and a few Caribbean islands, where the bark is collected year-round.
