Acne is a disease of the sebaceous glands of the skin. Depending on its severity, acne vulgaris (common acne) can manifest itself through oily skin with pimples, pustules and blackheads. These skin blemishes mainly occur on parts of the body with a particularly large number of sebaceous glands. These include the face, neck, décolleté, upper arms and back.
Often acne disappears by itself at around 20 years of age. However, some people still have acne by the age of 30. While fair-skinned people can have permanent red spots or scars from acne, people with darker skin can be affected by brownish spots or scars, too.
Acne can be triggered by various causes like hormonal imbalance, medicine, like cortisone, anabolic steroids (doping agents) or lithium, sunscreen, chemicals such as lubricating oil or chlorine, psychological factors, smoking or wrong skincare products.
Acne predominantly appears during the teenage years in puberty. In this age group acne is by far the most common skin disease. Almost 80 to 90 percent of the teenagers are more or less severely affected by acne.
If acne pimples occur more frequently, to avoid permanent scars a visit to the dermatologist will be necessary, who will suggest an appropriate treatment.
Caution Do not squeeze the acne spots or pop pimples as the infection may spread.
