A tiny, evergreen tree or shrub mate can grow 6 meters (20 feet). Maté possesses broad leaves, white blooms, and little reddish fruit.
Maté is commonly grown as a crop in Argentina, Spain, and Portugal, as well as in northern Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. When the berries are ripe, the leaves are harvested, cooked over a fire, crushed, and then preserved in sacks for a year before being sold.
