Guggul is a spiny shrub or tree with red fruits and oval, serrated leaves that can reach a height of 2 m (6 1/2 ft). Guggul gum resin, which forms light yellow to dark brown "tears" on the stems, is extracted from the bark.
Guggul is mentioned as being beneficial in treating obesity in early Ayurvedic writings. This prompted an investigation into the gum resin's potential therapeutic value for issues related to fat metabolism, such as elevated blood cholesterol levels.
Guggul grows in the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East, which has a dry, semi-arid desert setting.
