Minor burns and sunburn

From sunburn to reaching for the baking tray - minor burns are easily done. The danger of a burn depends on the size and depth of the burn wound. For example, accidents can occur through fire or other hot objects such as an iron. Similar injuries can occur when scalded by boiling water. Minor burns or scalds usually affect the uppermost layer of the skin (epidermis), which reddens, swells and hurts. Unlike more serious burns, blisters do not usually form and the skin heals completely. Sun burn (Dermatitis solaris) is an acute inflammation of the skin, which is caused by too much sunlight or UV-RADIATION from other sources. Light-skinned people are particularly susceptible. A light sunburn shows itself as reddening of the skin, while a severe sunburn causes blisters to form on the skin and may even leave scars. Repeated sunburn also increases the risk of skin cancer.

What To Expect

Minor burns manifest themselves as surface reddening of the skin, pain, burning, a feeling of tension and possibly the formation of clear blisters and open wounds. They usually heal on their own within about two weeks and leave hardly any scars. During and after healing, an annoying itching often occurs. Later sensory disturbances are also possible. It should be noted that the course of burns is dynamic and the actual extent of the burns can sometimes only become apparent with a delay of 1-3 days.

Made Worse By

In case of minor burns and sunburn you should definitely avoid the sun and UV rays. The skin should be well protected. In addition, one should avoid touching the burned skin area.

How Common

Up to now, there is a lack of good epidemiological data on the frequency of burns. These occur not only as accidents at home, at work and during leisure time. According to a survey in the USA, it can be assumed that around 36 percent of the population there develop sunburn at least once a year, with children up to the age of four years affected in around a fifth of cases, although they make up only five percent of the population.
